OTL amplifiers with fairly high output impedances (such as the Atma-Sphere S-30) will deliver significantly increased power into a speaker's impedance peaks. If the speaker has a smooth impedance except for its bass impedance peaks, this characteristic of OTLs can be exploited to extend the bass a bit deeper than it would otherwise have gone. I have measured a 5 dB difference in the deep bass region going from a low output impedance (high damping factor) solid state amp to the S-30. By tuning the speaker lower than normal, the OTL's increased power output into the impedance peaks gives me a deep bass "free lunch".My understanding is that this technique depends on the OTL amp approximating a current source, which I think is only possible when the output impedance is quite high. Perhaps Ralph can clarify if needed.
