I know that the Joules are Bobby's favorite amps to drive the Merlins. It is possible that you can get the control you want combined with that great sound with another speaker. But I really doubt it. You know, you have 100W pr channel and a speaker with a nice impedance. Earlier this year I spoke to a dealer of both Merlin and Joule, and in fact he talked about the same issue. I have heard the Merlins with GRAAF GM-20 OTL. That's only 20W which is a little on the low side for driving the speakers, but it has bass control. Maybe it's because the amps is balanced. My guess is that the ultimate match with Merlins would be GRAAF GM-200 OTL, driven by a true balanced preamp of high quality. With that combo, I think you would have what you are looking for.
