When I first heard MA-1s, they were in Paul Bolin's listening room. There was a slight "dark" quality to them, in the sound of the lower freqs. This IS NOT to be compared w/ a lack of treble! These amps have more high end extension than really ANYTHING else, not to mention the truest midrange. After having listened to them w/ a variety of other components, it has become clear that other amps just don't have as full and true sounding a bass response, even though some (solid state) may have slightly more authority in the low end. When matched w/ the MP-3 (or I'm sure the MP-1) this is NOT an issue, because the Atma-sphere pre amps, though less mentioned, are as outstanding as the amps. After over a year of shopping, and listeneing to alot of systems (many at Paul's home) I spent my money to buy Atma-sphere amps AND pre-amp. It is not just that they are well suited to each other, it's that they are each just better than everything else. While Paul is a good friend, I no longer am in a hurry to hear the next thing he is reviewing. Happy listening.
