Thanks Al!It sounds like you, Marc, and Paul don't feel that the MA-1 has a lower treble emphasis; rather that it was some kind of incompatibility problem.
Al, you mention that it could be a speaker interaction with the highish output impedance of the Atmasphere.
Paul, points out that it could be due to the stock driver tubes.
Marc, argues that its the source that the reviewer was using which was likely to blame. In fact, Michelson, in his review of the MA-1 pretty much even makes this comment:
"My reference system does not lean toward mellowness, so the amps may simply be giving more of the truth than I was accustomed to hearing."-MichelsonThat is what I was wondering. When I had heard the M60s, the sound was nothing short of astonishing! The first impression I got, was UNBELIEVABLE transient speed! Astounding CLARITY. Even a continuous flowing feeling of "relaxed" (sorry, I don't know how else to describe it). The LAST thing that came to my mind was bright, grainy, or glare. I simply forgot those words existed. But I have only heard the MA2.2s on the Ultimate Soundlabs, with an MP1 and a Basis Ovation turntable; and the M60s with a pair of Radio Shack Linaeum tweeter bookshelf speakers,MP1 and turntable again; and the M60s with Ralph's horn speakers at the show.
The reviewers I mentioned have considerably more years and experience under their belt reviewing the most expensive gear out there. So, I felt, that maybe they had cought something, I hadn't. Yet, the more I learned about the Atmaspheres, the more I began to question things, like their source, or speaker, or room, or whatever? I think, that if you haven't had a truly accurrate component in your system before, then the new faults you hear are likely to be attributed to the new component rather than the existing system; simply because the existing system you know, and the new one you don't.
