if you check out the Experience Music Project in Seattle, you'll find the entire mixing room's components from Electric Ladyland studios dating to about 1970 or so, I would guess. This were a number of the Jimi Hendrix LPs were recorded and mixed with that gear, among other well-known LPs of the day.In that display, you'll find a set of Altec 846As used as the monitors. Folks here will recognize this model as the same components from the consumer version of the same design: Valencia and Flaminco. A well-restored set of these or the slightly later versions of Altec Model 19s would certainly apply for your described needs, IMHO.
So, if you like old-school rock, by process of deduction, you'd certainly want to try some horn speakers.....whether you want to go with the more esoteric modern high efficiency horns or the older designs like Altec/JBL/UREI is certainly your call.
