i listen to a good share of classic rock, rock of lots of types, and in fact, just music of loads of varieties actually... and since i'd reckon the larger portion of PA systems in venues that have rock in them are horn loaded.. i'd say that it's a good bet you're getting the genuine deal from horn speaks for at very least classic rock! i think you run into varying degrees of success in 'the perfect presentation' of a particular music type on ANY speaker.. no matter how well thought out.in regards to rear loaded single driver speaks.. i dunno if i'd consider them 'proper horn' speakers (i'm ducking when i say this) in the same mold as front loaded direct radiators and compression drivers. that's horn loaded.. but a totally different critter.. they can do lots of things well.. but single driver speaks are still usually loaded with littler drivers than honkin' PA drivers..
i had the same conundrum as you when i had DR speaks, being a musician, little boxes always sounded so constrained.. so a good friend pushed me towards altec woofs and horns.. can't say, despite the hard road of getting it right, that i'd go back to dome tweets and little speakers.. moving air is definitely the order of the day when you want those dynamics.. and little bitty drivers... well.. physics says they just can't move as much air!
but like anything else in music reproduction... there's a whole mess of options from source to sound that can make or break ya.. so go and listen to as many as you can get hold of and see what you like-- and don't be discouraged by a bad implementation or two... there's lots of bad sounding systems of all varieties.. and horns done wrong can sound amazingly horrible... it doesn't mean they're ALL bad.. they're definitely a bitch godess in that regard! but do your homework and see if you like the presentation.. it's different, but you may just love it!
