Just to be clear, I liked the midrange that my Hedlunds/DX4s played when it was producing the bass uninhindered. It is just that the midrange was NOTICABLY BETTER when the bass was filtered out of the feed to the Hedlunds/DX4s (not only were the speakers cleaner sounding, but the amps were less stressed too). So my question to you is have you ever tried to filter the bass from the feed to your backhorns to hear what it sounds like without the midrange mucked up by the bass? I mentioned Dave Slagle doing this, but Paul Butterfield is another one who does this.Deep bass to me is under 20 hz (actually, my desire is to be flat to under 15 hz). I am sure that it can be done with a bass horn, but it would be a VERY large one at that, and the midrange would be so out of sinc or would have to be significantly delayed to match the bass (I don't want additional electronics in my midrange).
If you use an infinite baffle system, you can install multiple drivers so that they don't move much (like your horn), but they will be able to play flat down to under 15 hz (some systems are flat to under 10 hz).
