Are idiotic designs that try to get some bass, ANY bass, from overdamped drivers. This goes back 80 some years to Voight's notion that a light driver with a powerful motor would be best, then he discovered the goddam things couldn't make any bass, uh-oh. Horn loading in self defense I call it. A waste of space, wood and effort. If enamored of one of these little drivers you're better off building a vented box or OB and a sub, you'll get better bass and it's easier to build. Why waste you time and efforts on a backhorn with lousy bass when you can do an OB with lousy bass so much more easily? Eh?The only backhorns I ever heard worth a damn said JBL on the side and were loaded with 15s. Not exactly what the toe stickers around here are talking about.
Single drivers are OK though if one is fond of small direct-radiators I suggest a trip to Guitar Center and the purchase of some KRK ST-6s. If you're gonna do small DRs you might as well do fullrange ones. And they're cheap too. They serve as fine surrounds with my Model 19s. I guess my Fostexes would do that job OK too, that or as ashtrays in the garage.
