That is probably another issue that migth be the case. The ear is hearing things differently on low playback levels as it is most sensitive in the midrange...
If a system is tuned to play optimally at 90dB then playing louder or less loud does change the percieved frequency balance by the ear. A system tuned to play 110dB will sound relatively dull at low levels...
My wife is sounding way more friendly to my ears when she is talking to me instead of screaming my ears off telling me that I did something I should not have done... :)
