"The serious collector is pretty well served....."

To the contrary, I would say that the 'casual collector, or the beginning collector, may be well served' but a serious collector interested in quality performances, especially alternative performing styles, is IMHO rather poorly served.

Even if quality of the reproduced sound is the principle consideration there still is a huge hole in the SACD catalog, especially in classical and jazz.

For the serious collector who already has the original recordings on LP's or CD's on which the SACD reissues is based is it really worth spending the loot? I consider myself something of a 'serious collector' and for me the (lack of) availabilty of new performances in SACD is the critical issue which has kept me from buying a universal player to get the benefit of SACD.

I would much rather have a new performance of a work than to have the 'enth reissue of the same performance, and have a hard time paying, say 5K+ to reap the benefits of a few new releases which I can get in multilayer and play on my normal CDP.

Yeah SACD is better, but if the performance isn't, who cares! And judging from the actions of the major players, in hardware and software, I see little hope for seeing a renewed interest in new productions in this format. I could be wrong....but I'm sort of worried when I see major industry players like Philips and Sony getting out of the transport business that this SACD format has been declared, by them at least, to be a non starter. JMHO.
