New high resolution SACD releases, players and technology.

I use MS Office 97 and make my own templates with my own fields as Music Collector is geared towards Pop/Rock

I use MS Access for my Music Collection with a separate table for each format, here a sample listing from my SACD table:

Recording Title Recording Label Price
ADAMS: Fearful Symmetries; Chairman Dances [DSD] CCn'C Records 01912 SACD $17.99

Which I can sort my title, label or price. So I can look up anything by title or see how many recordings I have on any label. Or sort by price to see average price for each label and overall.

I also print reports every couple of months for my hard copy music book. I recycle the old copy.

Since this is not enough for Classical Music as I can't put as much detail and many SACDs have more than one composer, with samplers having sometimes more than 15. I have a "Composers" file in MS Word that lists each Composer, work, performers, format and Recording Company and number. I had to modify the listing a little bit as I cannot make it work in Audio Asylum's software. The composer listings are actually set up without the spaces between the compositions. Instead there is 2 spaces before the composition and 4 spaces before the performers, somewhat like the Schwann Catalog's Index style.

Here is Bartok for example:

BARTOK, BELA (1881-1945)

Concerto for Orchestra, Op. 116 (1945)
Kocsis, Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra [SACD] Hungaroton Classic HSACD32167
Reiner, Chicago Symphony Orchestra [SACD] RCA Living Stereo 61390-2

Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1, Sz. 83 (1926)
Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 2, Sz. 95 (1931)
Kocsis, Lehel, Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra [SACD] Capriccio 71 044

Dance Suite for Orchestra, BB. 86 (1923)
Hungarian Peasant Songs, BB. 107 (1933)
Kocsis, Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra [SACD] Hungaroton Classic HSACD32167

Hungarian Sketches. Sz. 97 (1931)
Reiner, Chicago Symphony Orchestra [SACD] RCA Living Stereo 61390-2

Miraculous Mandarin: Concert Suite from the dance-pantomime, Sz. 73 (1919)
Marriner, Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart [SACD] Capriccio 71 044

Music For Strings, Percussion and Celesta, Sz. 106 (1936)
Reiner, Chicago Symphony Orchestra [SACD] RCA Living Stereo 61390-2

Romanian Folk Dances arranged for Pan Flute and Orchestra (1915)
Herkenhoff, Raudales, Müncher Rundfunkorchester [SACD] Oehms Classics OC 603

Finally, I have a graph in MS Excel that show how many recordings I have in each format with a pie chart showing percentages. Followed by another graph showing how many recordings from each recording company.

So a simple entry of a recording of a single work it takes about 10 minutes to list on all three documents especially if the program notes have all the necessary Opus numbers and dates the composition was composed. If not in the notes I use The Oxford Dictionary of Music contained on my Multipedia CD-ROM.

A recording with a lot of composers can take 30 minutes to a hour to compile and list all the necessary information.

And then if I decide to sell a recording I have to do the process in reverse.

This all started several decades ago when I bought a recording I already owned, not a different performance but the exact same LP. It was embarrassing when I had to send it back to the seller and I had to pay for the shipping and explain I was such a dummy for not realizing I already owned the LP. That will never happen again.

Plus it’s fun to look through my collection without actually pulling each item out one by one.

The three databases have worked well for me.
