Pete -Not all DVD-As have hi-res stereo tracks. Some titles even say "Advanced Resolution Stereo" on the cover but do not contain hi-res stereo tracks. I've run into this with a couple of early Warner titles, a few Teldec, and Silverline also.
We all feel your pain regarding the navigation problems. DVD navigation in general is so annoying to me... it's almost to the point of being offensive. And for those of us who don't normally have a TV connected to our 2ch systems, it's often not worth the effort to listen to a DVD-A.
As far as the sonics go, I find the comparison is very player dependent. It's also hard to make apples vs. apples comparisons because only a handful of not very good sounding Universal pop/rock titles have equivalent releases in both formats.
