not exactly sure what you're getting at...

Both Xvid and X264 are coder/decoders, that is codecs. They are fine codecs and free. But they don't have anything to do with DVDs. DVDs use MPEG 2 coding and when you play them back you are using an MPEG 2 decoder (they can also handle MPEG 1 I believe). Perhaps you are suggesting that different software implementations of the DVD decoder lead to different results- no surprise here, as different DVD players also lead to different results. But you only use Xvid on an Xvid encoded file (this is a variant of MPEG 4).
