You should call and get an absolute confirmation that these are CLOSED CELL POLYETHYLENE and not the open cell sponge that is used for pillows and bolsters... these should be like the materials you see in swimming pools and for boating... being closed cell they don't absorb water (or too much sound energy based on the same principle).... a 6" diameter will give you the wavelength equivalent of about 2300 Hz at sea level, which is where a lot of "bright midrange" perception is... so the corners will act less as unintentional speaker horns... my own favorite solution is a little messier visually, and is expensive, although in the great scheme of things, pretty economical... RPG makes this stuff called Skyline, it is sold as the 7" deep and the 4" deep "low profile" ... personally I like the Low Profile better, I think it is less colored sounding and creates a really nice sense of space and volume... anyway, it is made from expanded polystyrene, like your cooler chests, and is pretty light, I mount it with industrial Velcro (which they call "hook and loop" on the product spec sheet)... long back order time... expect a eight to ten week wait from RPG, and sometimes they will ship you a dinged piece and hope you won't complain... that's how the business works it seems... having said that, if you mount a stack of 3-4 pieces of 24"x24" Skyline LP on your rear wall, if you
have squared corners behind your speaker, don't mount it facing foreward, but rather facing in, flush up against the corner, so the RPG faces each other across the space behind the speaker... the soundfield will just open up so amazingly... this will even work with modestly priced speakers... once we tested this and proved it to our satisfaction, our general conclusion was that the room, if properly engineered, is at least as important as the speaker itself, and you sould never, ever buy any high value type of system without CAREFULLY engineering the room or you're pouring your money down the toilet....
