That eBay foam vendor you mentioned, Foam By Mail, is a fraud. What they sell is cheap packing foam, and they basically stole the data from Auralex and show it as their own. So in this case you really do get what you pay for.
That said, none of the foam products are as good as what better vendors sell. Foam is okay for mids and high, but it has to be very thick to do much good at low frequencies. So the risk is you'll make the room dead enough or even too dead, yet it will still be boomy.
