Cheap foam can absorb specific frequencies a lot more than others, leaving the remianing sound in the room tonally skewed. This is in aditioon to any braodband absorption going on, and the whole issue of too bright vs. too dull.BTW, the fact that you have a bass null means you DO need some bass trapping, often, people are surprised at the fact that after adding bass traps, the room sound like it has MORE bass, and it is a more tuneful and dynamic bass, with definition and punch. Most bass freaks are NOT dispappopinted when ading traps to a room.
Also, adding bass traps, primarily in the corners, does not necessarily end up witnh the room dull, but rather, as you have discovered, with better clarity and less harshness.
You could DIY some Corner Tunes, Do a search for the Corner Tune product from Michael Greene, once you see a picture, it becomes clear that sewing up a set of four is not a big deal. Basically, it is a triangle of fiberglass, covered with some sort of cloth, whether it is burlap, speaker grille cloth, or one of the expensive acoustic grade cloths from the likes of Acoustone or Guilford. Some folks like to use a layer of polyester batting over the fiberglass, this can help contain any glass fibers that might slip through the cloth covering. For best results, use the 6 or 6 1/2" thick fiberglass. One can also use JUST polyester batting, but this costs more than fiberglass, and you have to use several layers to get any thickness.
