You need to try some more tubes...

Your statements are a bit strong and not altogether founded in reality. Yes...NOS tubes can be expensive, but don't get suckered in to buying the rarest examples, there are lots of great NOS out there that sound as good as the very valuable ones for much less money. NOS tubes were made when tubes were king and the companies making them drove the industry to its technological peak as far as materials, design, and reliability. Almost all the second hand ebay NOS tubes I have test great from section to section, and have been very reliable, not to mention most were designed for very long life in use. As for new production...I've tried EH 12ax7 and 6550, Ei12ax7, New Tung sol 12ax7 and 6550's....and now Shuguang 12ax7. The Shuguang tube is the first new tube that I've tried that has that realistic and magic feel in it's presentation , this is very encouraging, as for the rest....one of the EH 6550's died on me, the Ei tubes measure terribly between sections and the Tung Sol are just OK.....once in a while I take my Old TS6550's out and put the new ones in.....and go Blahhh...why did I bother. Get yourself a good pair of GE 5 star 5751's or a pair of telefunken 12ax7, both are plentiful and not that expensive if you shop around, and come back and tell us you can't see the difference or what the fuss is about. Assuming you don't have a Fisher Price stereo you will get a sense of realism with the NOS tubes that the new producers are having a hard time getting.
