Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: Help this pathetic newbie to tubes : )

Thank you for your insights on the ways one can understand what may be NOS and that what may appear as used hasn't been used. I grant you now as I did then that testing was always been a confounding issue. You can't say a tube is really unused if it has been "burned" in or gone through an extensive battery of tests. Therefore while you may have the priviledge of unsealing cases of factory "tested and burned in" (therefore used) they are new if because they were used only short time, It is virtually impossible to know if they used for a brief test drive or they were used for somewhat longer or greater periods of time. If you can't tell thermal discoloration means having current sent through them? What can you use? How is that different than a used tube that tests strong? I stand by my question about untested modern tubes. Before you do your QC and start selecting tubes do most modern production tubes share any of those characteristics. All I'm trying to say with some dramatic emphasis that NOS is a tough call unless you absolutely know. The best you can do is test the parameters see if it meets specs and short of opening time capsules there is precious little hope.
The faith in the dealer or as I said "unless you know the person who knows" are the methods most would rely on.
Honestly how many tubes of all you have seen or seen listed as true NOS, not used= New old stock = the real vintage tubes, are really NOS in your humble opinion? 80%? I have been told NOS by many sellers that ultimately test anything like an unused tube.
The dealers I have gotten to know, sell me great tubes, once in a rare while, they will they say outright NOS.
Admittedly I have not dealt with you, but your passion is obvious. I make no claims about how you personally decide to use "NOS". I think you use your fund of knowledge to label a tube with the term, only convinced its correct and wish to decieve no one. You have a lot of admirers here.
I admire your attention to people's concerns and your wilingness to even participate on this level. It is uncommon, for most dealers except the other inmate dealers. I don't want to cast aspertions (sp) on them.
