After reading all of these responses, my perspective has certainly been modified from before. I will certainly heed the advice of using the sources for tubes that have been mentioned in these responses, and being cautious of EBay and similar sales or trading channels. It's unfortunate that authenticty of these NOS products requires such an intimate knowledge of tubes - although it does add an interesting quality in a collector's sort of way. Ultimately, I expect to pay more for good service and good product - and I want good sound. The extra cost is worth it to me.I am glad to hear that the current offerings in the tube world are showing a trend for better performance, with some of them being good performers. At the price of these tubes, I am behooved to try them and see what they sound like in my gear. Hopefully I am pleasantly surprised by a few of them.
I am also very pleased to hear that tubes last from 5K-10K hours. If I like Tungsram, I don't feel compelled to drop thousands into a supply of replacement tubes.
This has been an interesting thread, and I look forward to learning more about all there is to know about tubes.
Thanks again.
Ken
