Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: Help this pathetic newbie to tubes : )

Thanks for the message.

I hope you are correct that market conditions and the adaptations by designers will secure first rate audio down the road. Perhaps my concern sounds silly, but it is merely a reaction to (what seems to be) the preference for NOS tubes for the best sound (compared to new stock). It is very apparent to me that I need to read more sources of information and gain depth of understanding of this niche of audio.

BTW, what are sweep tubes?

My first exposures to tubed audio in the 90's was not good, and left me quite prejudiced. I've also been leary to use tubed amps, because I'd always heard that they go through a lot of tubes (not sure how much really). I always reserved the possibility for introducing a well designed preamp into my system. I wish I hadn't waited so long.

My amps are NuForce Reference 9.02's. I got an excellent price on them back in May, and I love them especially with the BC3000 in front of it. I think I can listen to this combination for years to come, it is that good to my ears. The NuForce 9.02 really are excellent performers in many ways, as has been well documented by most sources that have reviewed it for nearly a year now. It will likely continue to get better as more class D designers jump into the fray. Despite all of the controversy about high RFI emissions, I have had superb results with them (I also do not use a tuner in my system). I think the well designed class D components are going to have a huge impact on audio before long. I think audiophiles still need to warm up to the idea that huge and expensive does not preclude excellent sound. I am just trusting my ears.

Of course, I may try a nice pair of Blue Circle mono amps and decide they are way more musical than the NuForce - HA! Hard to believe based on what I'm enjoying now, but there is so much to know, ya know?!? There are many paths...

Ken
