It is a well known fact over the years power output tubes usually wear out faster than preamp tubes. Too many years experience here guy to be wrong. I been collecting data since the early 1960s and looking back since the early 1930s. It is mostly hands-on experience. When some tubes dry up, and they are not your favorites any longer, one still has good trading stock. My PPP amps use eight matched power output tubes, so a stock of a few is not in my interest. I require 40 spares. Another fact is some of my amps will never be sold and having stocks at times of over 5000 audio tubes at various times, I know exactly what sounds best in my DIY amps. Even the same manufacture of the same tube with a few years difference date codes can make a difference. Another variable is one tube may excel in one circuit, but not in another circuit. Having a stock for a future purchase is not a bad idea. However, the above statements does not hold true with everyone.
Who said a tube dealer works for free? I did not & why should they? I am a tube dealer. I do offer a 100% no questions asked guarantee. I ship top quality & buyers want the tube more than their money before & after the purchase. Returns have been less than 1%. I do not advertise here & do not sell any tubes to persons that ask me from this site. Sometimes I give them away though.
Who said Thoriated Tungsten is essential for a quality product. I did not. I did state & believe a good vacuum is essential for a good product. And, it may relate to the quality of later production tubes. As for info, persons are interested in details concerning tubes. That is what AA is about here- tubes.
As for tube dealers here on AA, I believe my comments are unbiased. My info is from great feedback at this site year after year regarding the tube dealers WHO post here. And, they do not post more than the usual info about tube applications after a question is posted, not posts like 'I got the best deal', etc on this site.
As for the 'good luck' statement, I would state Happy Hunting to the newbie. Tubes are fun to play with & usually a good investment outperforming your CD or stocks. So what if one has $2K of spare tubes, a snowmobile or a small fishing boat costs more.
BTW- Black getter or some call black chrome getter flash is not a guaranteed sign of a used tube. new tubes have black chrome getter flashes.
