Re: Best 6550 tupe amplifier

Wow. Mentions of a the CJ MV-75... I happen to have a pair of these. One I bought new as a kid. I had Bill Thalmann update my pair of MV-75s. Bill was employee #3 and engineering director at CJ for 20 years. His updates transformed them - and for the better ;) I had a CJ Prem 11A and I'm now using Prem 12s. As much as I enjoyed, and am enjoying, these Premier amplifiers, I think I like the updated MV-75s just a bit more. They have a bit more of that animating sparkle. The MV-75 is biased further into Class A than the 11/12s. It runs about 100V more on the plates, so it's harder on output tubes than the Premier 11/12s.

I think the MV-75, updated, could be a nice choice for a relatively inexpensive, nice-quality entre into 6550 amps.

A couple of Dyna Mk3s could be fun if you're interested in some DIY'ing/mod'ing. It's been a long time since I've listened to either stock or mod'ed ones myself.

I'm intrigued by the HK Cit II. Maybe someday...
