Re: Best 6550 tupe amplifier

I vote for my Conrad-Johnson Premier Eleven A. It's been the perfect amp for me. The only other 6550 amps I compared with it prior to purchase were the Audio Research VT-100 and VT-200. I did not care for the Audio Research 'house' sound when compared with C-J: somewhat too bright and clinical. With C-J, I get what is, for my tastes, the perfect balance of detail and smoothness that fits well with both CDs and vinyl. The P-11 also runs well with a variety of different beam power tubes. I've used Svetlana and SED 6550s, "pre-NATO" EI KT-90s (my favorite!), EH KT-88s and NOS GE 6550s (thanks Jim McShane). All work well with this amp. As always, your favorite amp will depend on your personal tastes and associated equipment.
