Among the best CD reproduction I've heard were both tube and solid state units. The latest version of the Audionote DAC-5 signature that I heard was absolutely fantastic. But, on a more affordable level, I also like the solid state Naim CDS3, the player I ended up purchasing. Quite different sound, but very compelling as well.
