It seems to me that since the "guts" of the sound machine in 95% of all CDPs is a DAC with digital filtering, differences in the output stage would have a predictable but not major sound differences. I think someone said that already: look at Naim and Quad, quite musical SS CDPs. (My ears don't find Regas to be as "musical").Now my ears think that AN Dacs sound noticeably different than other Dacs, tubes or SS, and that difference is due to the DAC circuit not the output stage.
So, no, my ears don't need tubes to get a musical sound, they need an AN Dac.
