I just checked Antique Electronics Supply www.tubesandmore.com and Triode Electronics www.triodeelectronics.com and this is their prices:AES: 6550C, $25.95 each or $103.80 per quad with a small charge to get a matched quad or $207.60 for eight of them
Triode: matched quad of 6550C for $129.90 or $259.80 for eight.
I routinely buy from both places. It seems to me that $800 plus tax for two quad of 6550C is a plain old fashioned rip-off, price gouging, taking advantage of you kind of deal.
doubt if I'd trust them to do anything else to my amp if they tried to rip me off like that for the tubes.
