Re: Plate dissipation & tube rolling

Much misinterpretation here. Power output and plate dissipation are in NO WAY the same thing. You can get 100 watts from tubes biased at 35 watts idle, or 50 watts idle current. Plate voltage makes power for the most part. Idle current ("bias") only determines Class of operation (more current is closer to Class A, less is closer to class B)Assuming a 4 tube 200 watt amp pushes the tubes to 50 watts would be something like reading that an amp uses 350 watts from the wall socket and assuming it is a 350 watt amp. Also, the KT88 has 42 watts plate and 7 watts screen dissipation for nearly 50 total. At 750 VDC plate, biasing at 60-65 watts would place the tube at about 48 watts TOTAL (plate + screen) dissipation. Of course, this is inviting disaster; biasing tubes much above 75% of max is not advised. Aim for 45 ma or so. Finally, within reason, CURRENT kills tubes, not voltage-- provided the max ratings are not exceeded. 750VDC is quite high, but I would have NO Qualms about running KT88s at 600 VDC plates.
