I thought the truly excellent bands don't toil in obscurity? If you're going to (correctly) chide Don about TVZ not being a 'band,' then you can't use Moon Martin to rebut why Big Star wasn't great in the first place. And Moon Martin (who I never said I didn't like) is hardly the issue although you seem to want to make him (or someone else's taste other than yr own) the issue...unsurprising since yr premise is extremely flawed. If Berlin, who did experience success, is on a level with Big Star (who didn't), in yr mind, if that's actually the case, you still haven't told us why. Instead you say that Big Star wasn't great because...they had too much competition?
If you think that the Shoes or the Records or the Lyres had as much influence as Big Star, that's yr opinion, but I'll defer to a guy like Paul Westerberg on that (Rick Nielsen, too, while we're at it). Who was more influential, the Records...or the Only Ones? The Vertebrats...or NRBQ? There you go, there's one of those bands that can't be 'great' because they don't qualify according to you.
And I didn't misread anything, I know how the term 'influence' was being used in yr post. You laid out rules that say that a derivative band cannot be great. I offered three exceptions to that rule fairly quickly & you dismissed them all based on nothing but YR taste, then accused me of doing the same thing. Ahem.
If you feel every White Stripes album is the same, then let's go song by song between the first one & Elephant, or between De Stijl & Satan. You prefer the Offspring to Green Day, fine, but for me that's sorta like thinking that the Dead Boys were a better band than the Ramones.
Coming up with the names you seem to feel are on a level with Big Star is a pretty clear case of wanting to have it both ways. I call BS.
