From Classic Rock to Progessive to hip hop to today's hot new tunes!

Your second point neglects the commercial importance of capturing the zeitgeist of the moment

I wouldn't quibble about Radiohead's significance, but from what I understand, Oasis just released their first meritorious album in years.

Radiohead is very talented, and several other bands have "made it" in their wake. But they are also of the moment, embrased, as it were, by the fan base with the highest hipster quotient.

Quite frankly, for many of my friends and family, Phish would be the most important group of the 90s, not Nirvana or Pearl Jam. I'm arguing the merits of over the other, just pointing out that there are entire musical scenes out there that tend to exist a little below the radar (except when they're being mocked on South Park).

Porcupine Tree continues to party like its 1973. Whether that's your cup of tea, doesn't mean they don't have the chops.

If you use your logic wouldn't Britney (or Cheryl Crow, to keep it within the realm of rock) be preeminent artists based on their sales?

Hell, I haven't even heard a Radiohead song on the radio or tv since "Creep." I can't believe they even still have a label. (Just kidding, I know they sell beaucoups of albums, even without commercial airplay).

Also, with music profits going down year after year, increased consolidation, and the folding of many labels, there is less money for promotion, fewer artists being signed by the mega-labels, and many groups have been unceramoniously dropped.
