Will,Some additional "skull sweat" tells me the idea of using the 5 VAC rectifier winding in buck mode will not work connected to the rectifier winding's CT. :~( It will buck in 1 direction and boost in the other.
What is the power trafo situation in the amp? Did you use a single trafo for signal tube heater power, B+, and rectifier heater power?
Bucking the voltage that's rectified down CAN still be done. How complex the bucking arrangement will be depends on the exact configuration of power trafos in the amp.
