Re: Gotta replace my tube rectifier with a SS rectifier, what are the best choices?

Will,

You definitely can replace the vacuum rectifier with SS diodes. You can even mount the diodes and some other parts in an Octal plug to take advantage of the socket that's already in the chassis.

There are several things you have to watch out for. 1st, I suspect the hum is associated with the 5 VAC rectifier heater supply. Tie those wires off close to the power trafo. SS diodes are instant on, UNLIKE the slow start a GZ34 or GZ37 gives. You can slow the B+ rise down by inserting a CL150 inrush current limiter in each of the lines leading from the power trafo to the diodes. What is the end to end voltage of the power trafo? That voltage will influence the choice of SS diodes employed. In any event, the forward drop in SS diodes is SMALLER than that in a vacuum rectifier. Can you take advantage of the extra B+ you'll get? If not, you'll have add a dropping resistor to the PSU filter circuitry.

BTW, what does the PSU filter look like now?
