Try hooking your speaker to the hot leads of both channels (8 ohms, say) and running a music signal through the amp. Then adjust the gain on one channel for MINIMUM sound. Zero sound would be perfect balance, but I don't think you can achieve that. This should be easier and more accurate, and not need a sound meter or an instrument of any kind except your ears.
