Peter; Your'e right it does sound nuts. Personally I think you are wasting your time with the dual transformers for better stereo separation. For low conducted crosstalk use separate regualtors and a good board layout. For low radiated crosstalk use point to point wiring using a shielded coax or the equivalent. Using the above techniques correctly you should be able to get stereo separation of at least 100db at 1 kHz.
Star ground is essentially that all ground returns go directly back to return of the power supply through the pc board ground plane: no sneak paths through the chassis.
Note: as you are going through the design and test process note the phase relationship between the main signal and the crosstalk.
