Doesn't happen, as numerous scientists have pointed out. Ask Mr. Ditmars.We regard all sorts of unobservable mechanism as happening in history. We can't observe them in the past, but have to look at presently existing pieces of evidence. Same thing.
Genetic variation occurs, it's observable by the appropriate means. (Darwin's theory of inheritance was rather different from current ones.) You have given no reason why such variations should not have occurred in the past. This helps explain many features in our world and provides a framework for fruitful research.
Equating that with religious faith us using the term "faith" in an equivocal manner.
And just what do you know about creation myths?
Actually, I prefer to use a definition of evolution on the lines of Peter J. Bowler's: "any theory postulating a natural process for the development of life on earth," though "on earth" is ultimately too restrictive. (Ref. Evolution, The History of an Idea, University of California Press, 1984, p. xii.) That way, I don't have to worry about controversies over exactly what Darwin did and said (interesting though they may be) which have nothing to do with substantive scientific issues.
