"From 1934 to 1938, Blumlein worked on EMI's electronic television system. He was responsible for the overall system design (405 scan-lines interlaced two-to-one at 25 frames) as well as many component circuits. In November 1936, the British Broadcasting Company used the EMI system, when it inaugurated the world's first public all-electronic television service."
He also came up with a proposal for simple stereo-pair recording that gives pretty much the most acurate image you can get w/2 channels (IMO).
There are lots of different mic configurations that work for different kinds of recording, but the Blumlein pair is one of the "classic" purist approaches.
