I think that is a fact that changing of phase shift do contribute to change of imaging. DPL/DPLII and matrixed/surround encoding/decoding use the phase shift properties to project image far beyond its intended speaker (ie phantom center).

But couple of questions remain:

1. Do a cable causes enough phase shift to be noticeable?

2. Since one need two speakers or more to change imaging using phase shift properties (for example, 180 degree phase angle from two front speakers would project the image behind us), would change of phase shift in the cable alone would contribute to image changing since phase shifting did not occur [independently] with each speakers and both speaker will be effected equably by the cable phase shift?
