If you want a wire that imparts no sound of its own, you need a wire with zero resistance, zero capacitance, and zero inductance. There's no test for this because there's no wire with those "zero" physical parameters.

However, the reason for using big, fat, heavy gauge wire is an attempt to achieve those zero parameters. The fatter the wire, the lower its resistance. It's physical construction is designed to achieve the lowest capacitance and inductance.

I use 10-gauge stranded speaker wire in my system. For all practical purposes, this seems to be a reasonable compromise to achieve adequate sound quality. Here's the wire I use:
