binaural recording comments

I got excited about the possibilities of this a few years ago. I bought a couple of dozen binaural recordings by mail. I have good headphones and a good headphone amp. Bottom line: they did not work that well for me. While the illusion of instruments to the left and right worked well, the illusion of front and back did not work very well.

My conclusion was that the HRTF used in recording these probably does not match my own head size and shape. This is one of the pitfalls of binaural recording, you use a dummy head that is supposed to represent the listener, but listeners are all different.

I wish that this had worked for me as well as it does for some others. It would indeed provide a cheap way to achieve a highly realistic illusion of surround sound. But it does not do that for me.
