I'm not defending PC USB [I'm a Mac fanboy after all] but I'd be curious to know....

What Windows OS were you running and did you have the USB driver for your DAC loaded on the PC? The driver is usually supplied by the DAC maker. If not, audio quality could be severely limited from the PC USB. [Mac includes the necessary driver. More recent Windows has a USB Audio Class 2 driver built-in as well].
