Ding, ding, ding! No more calls, please -- we have a winner!

Marianne Martin (second from the left in the first row of the photo) won the inaugural Tour de France Feminin in 1984. (More info at the link below.)

As for those who would like to place an asterisk by her name in the record books, just recall what Stephen Roche had to say after he won the Tour in 1987. He was being questioned if his victory was legitimate since Hinault had retired and LeMond had been injured in a hunting accident (no, not by Dick Cheney). Roche replied (use your best Irish brogue here), "Here's the thing of the deal -- there's two hundred guys tryin' to win this race, an' I'm the guy that won it!"

As far as the hair goes, it is hard to believe, isn't it. The two guys with the longest hair (Doug Emerson, left rear and Scott Havlick, third from left in the middle row) were early adopters of cycling's first hardshell helmet, that big white Bell. It was hard to believe they could even get them on over the hair. But Scott rode the Coors Classic with the Bell and had an excellent finish in the top twenty, considering many of the world's top riders were in the race.
