If all you are doing is modifying someone else's platform, you will be constrained by the limitations of that platform. An example is substituting the clock with a low jitter version. The improvement is marginal compared to avoiding PLL in the circuit altogether. I want jitter in the picoseconds, not nanoseconds.
I went for the reverse approach: which is keep the DAC and analog stage generic, and take a different approach to presenting the signal to the DAC. I don't use a single component from any existing player design. Not even the case or remote control (but I used a spare remote control that was originally intended for something completely different).
I dare say if we combined our ideas we may get a much better player since our approaches are complementary - i focus on everything up to the DAC, and you focus on everything after.
