Well, I would agree with that. Frankly, I don't really trust my ears, since they have a tendency to interpret anything that's new and different as "better", when in reality it's just different. Our ears are also wonderfully self adjusting, which means they adapt to a particular sonic signature. Eventually you believe that sonic signature must be "correct", even though it may be very coloured.

Blind testing does not overcome our ears' ability to adapt. It's a good way to calibrate how "honest" our ability to perceive differences are, but that's all.

My golden rule is never believe your first impressions, even after burning in the player. There has been many instances where my final opinion of a player is 180 degrees away from my initial impressions.

Joe's prototype player was a classic example. Initial impression was very favourable, I went "wow!" Then, after a few weeks listening, I felt the pacing was very wrong. I rang Joe, and he agreed to send me a "production" model which is based on a different design, and I'm glad he did because it did not exhibit the same issues.
