Part of the appeal of the ipod is that you're not just carrying a player, but the music as well. The trouble to me is carrying around a CD player and easily damaged CD's. To have the amount of music available in a 20gb ipod, even at lossless compression rates, available on CD's you would be carrying around 60 CD's with you. So in terms of portability, the ipod wins, even when paired with an amplifier.Although I haven't made the comparison, and it is going to be headphone, player, and recording specific, I doubt that a CD properly ripped to apple lossless, played through a line out into a good headphone amplifier would sound worse than the portable CD player. You have stirred some interest though, so I will probably out of curiousity do a comparison. I have a well respected panasonic portable CD player that isn't made anymore and was supposed to be one of the better sounding portables in it's time.

- I don't think that you would find that the CD player sounded better than ipod + amp. - orpheus 11:37:16 01/30/06 (1)
