I asked about this last year, and while it had been rumoured, nothing legit ever surfaced. What got me thinking about it again was an iPod. My dad got an iPod Nano for Christmas, and since his operating system was too old to run the iTunes software, he asked me to load some CDs onto it. Music and my dad go way back, and he's been known to build his own speakers. So, I figured it was wise to let him sample the various resolutions of playback to see what he preferred.
So, I recorded the same track ("Carimhoso" from Yo-Yo Ma's Obrigado Brazil) at three levels of compression: 128 kps, 320 kps, and Apple Lossless. Listening through higher quality Sony earbuds as well as my Grado SR80s, there were subtle, but discernable differences between them.
What I found surprising was that, much larger than the difference between any of the compression schemes was the difference between Apple Lossless and the real CD played back on a $50 Sony Walkman. The Walkman EASILY bested the best sound the iPod could deliver.
This experience has left me wondering if there would be similar level of improvement with an SACD Walkman. Or, would the degree of improvement simply be the same as listening to the CD vs. SACD layers through headphones on my home stereo?
And, yes, I DO spent a lot of time thinking about pointless things...

- Nope. I didn't forget a thing. The Nano's compactness is intriguing, but... - String Section 22:13:18 01/29/06 (1)
