The iPods don't offer a variable line-level output. The line-level output is probably around 2 volts. You use the line-level output to connect to a preamplifier or to a car stereo's line-level inputs (on the rear of the unit).The link I used was for the dock-to-RCA connector. Many car stereos have an 1/8" AUX input on the front for connection to portable devices. There are also dock-to-(male/female) 1/8" connectors that serve the same purpose.
