There should be no sonic difference between Apple Lossless and the PCM on the CD (the two are mathematically identical, for whatever that's worth). What you're hearing are the differences in the analog section (DACs, headphone amplifier, etc) between the iPod Nano and your Sony Walkman. Apple's headphone outputs go through an equalizer and sub-standard amplification: that's been known for a few years now.You can access the line-level output straight from the iPod's DAC if you connect via the bottom dock connector to an accessory dock-to-RCA add-on (or similar, as there are numerous versions for different environments/applications). This takes the equalizer and sub-standard headphone amplifier out of the equation for comparison purposes. I don't know if your Walkman has a line-level output, but I used to have a cheap $17 portable CD player that had one.
To answer your sonic difference question re: SACD portables (if they're ever produced), it will depend on the analog section (DACs, headphone amplifier, etc). Any format can be made to have suck-ass sonics if the "right" compromises in quality are made.
Below is a link to a sonic quality upgrade for home and RCA-input-capable car audio use for the iPods with a dock connector. You can always DIY and use audiophile cables and connectors if you're so inclined. Just don't try to sell them by advertising "Monster sonics from your little iPod" 'cause yo ass might get sued. :-)
