I have been using a used one now for more than 2 years. I use it almost daily and push it hard. No problems with any discs. I use it withBel Canto Pre 6
CAL Audio MCA
Magnepan 3.6 & 1.6sI have compared the sony to CAL Audio 2500 DVD/CD; ARCAM FMJ DV27A; McCormack UDP; Marantz 8400; Marantz SA8260; modded XA777ES; Sony SCD-555ES -- in my system.
It beats all of these in SACD and redbook in my opinion, except the modded version of course, but for $2000 more there was only a moderate increase in dynamics, and little in detail, and livelyness. The CD of the CAL and the Marantz 8260 was very close. Sony SACD was better than all. The McCormack was disappointing to me based on its reviews, plus it had lower output which decreased my headroom on my demanding maggies.
The only downer on Sony XA777ES is seperate output for 2ch and mch -- but for you that will not be a problem. You can also set the SACD layer to always be read as 2ch !!
Good Luck !!
