Re: Dalton, your XA-777ES still works OK ?

Yes, my Sony SCD-777ES is still working fine. I guess I'm lucky. In a little over 4 years, it NEVER failed on any disc I put into it except for the time I inadvertently put a DVD-A in it. I've never had a player perform so well for so long. It never fails to read a disc, never skips, never shows any unusual glitches during operation. (Of course, I keep it clean in a smoker-free, pet-free house and feed it well-cared-for discs, but I'm still impressed with its reliability.)

It might be on its way out of my system though. I just purchased a Denon DVD-5910 to use as a universal player. If I keep it, it will replace my SCD-XA777ES for SACD, Sony DVP9000ES for video and Technics DVD A-10 for DVD-A playback. So far, the Denon smokes the video from the DVP-9000ES - no contest. The Sony DVP9000ES wasn't even state of the art for DVD video when it came out in 2001, and it's easily surpassed by many "cheap" $300 players today.

The Technics A-10 is a joke in comparison to the Denon for DVD-As, which now sound very close to the smooth analog-like sound of SACD. Characteristics that I once attributed to the DVD-A format are clearly faults of the Technics now that I've heard the Denon's DVD-A performance.

The CD performance of the Denon is markedly better than that of the SCD-777ES - larger, deeper soundstage with deeper more articulate bass and better transparency. I'm hearing little details in very familiar CDs that I never noticed with the Sony.

The only area where it's a close call is on SACD. If the Denon is better, it's only marginally so. I use full range speakers all around, so the Denon's superior bass management doesn't come into play. I just have to determine now whether the advantages of consolidation and better video and DVD-A performance are worth investing $3200 in (less the resale value on the Sonys).
