As the owner of an XA-777ES for several months now, I would not leave that off your list . . . although you'd be doing well to bring one in at under $1k (I paid more).I'm not the least bit interested in multichannel and have been very pleased with its performance as a 2-channel machine. There were some logic issues, that apparently were characteristic of this production run, but Sony fixed them under warranty. In addition, Sony has a very reasonable flat-rate repair (a few hundred $$$) IIRC for this machine.
I have not heard of the sled motor mechanical issues that affect the SCD-1 and SCD-777ES, which share the same transport. The XA-777ES has a different transport.
