Home Hi-Rez Highway

New high resolution SACD releases, players and technology.

You might be right - Here are my experiences.

I had a chance to listen to a Boulder DAC and it is my current reference for how good digital can sound. If I could afford to own the Boulder gear, I would. In my own home, I have only compared sub $2000 digital pieces over the last year or so. Things like the Marantz 8400 which I did not like.

I was assuming that something must be wrong with your setup if you were getting a very flat soundstage. When I attempted to run my setup in a smaller room, I managed to kill the depth of the soundstage. When I moved everything back into my 22 x 25 main room I got my soundstage back. I also managed to kill my soundstage in the main room by trying to run my 8260 through a Marantz SR-18 receiver.

It was wrong for me to make these assumptions. You obviously have a lot of experience with installation and setup since in addition to being a computer programmer (as listed in your profile) you also co-own an AV store. Seriously, I misjudged your background.

A better thing would be for me to share what has worked for me.

Interconnects:

My 8260 works best with AudioQuest Diamondback .5 meter RCAs. It also works well with Cardas Golden Cross 1 meter, and Tara Labs RSC.

It does NOT sound as good with Kimber PBJ or Goertz silver. These both sounded thin. It may be that the 8260 does NOT work well with high capacitance cables.

Power Cable:

Don't use the stock cable. I use a PS Audio power cable. I also use the 14 gauge power cable from a retired Sun Server when I bring the player to the office.

Isolation:

Mod Squad isofeet. Versalab Red Roller on top.
